Before I transferred to SBCA, I exhausted all the remedies possible just to stay in San Beda Mendiola. In fact, I wrote a letter to our Dean that I am willing to re-take all my second year subjects including those subjects which I passed.
The QPI negotiations were not enough to include me in the list of those students who are retained in the College of Law.
Our Dean did not grant my petition to retake all my 2nd year subjects instead he offered me to retake all my subjects. It means I would be back in first year. The term used in Mendiola if a student goes back to First Year in Law is called "whitewash".
I did not agree with the condition he gave so the most logical thing for me is to transfer to San Beda College Alabang to continue finish my 2nd year level. Both schools employ practically the same system. Almost same line-up of Professors and same style of teaching. If you factor out the travel time to Alabang, it is really the best alternative if you were not retained in Mendiola.
New Place, Familiar Faces|
Although I was new in the school, I recognized almost 40% of the students because I have already seen them or meet them in Mendiola. My fellow transferees call it 'Mini-Mendiola'. It is then I learned that Alabang is also the alternative school chosen by those who transferred from Ateneo Law School.
Culture shock
As the first semester progress, I noticed that some of my classmates are fond of using 'team' play during quizzes and exams. They have this formation in the examination room and the necessary signals to execute their plan. And when the results are released, they have the audacity to gloat their scores. In fact, sometimes the one who copied gets the higher grade than the person he copied from.
I was shocked because in my 2 year stay in Mendiola, I have never encountered such a thing. Maybe because the students there are afraid of Karma or maybe because I was 'fortunate' enough not to be included in a class where there are rampant cheaters.
My fellow Mendiola transferees talk about this trend in our new school. We made a disputable presumption that the reason why SBCA School of Law has not fared well in the recent BAR exams is because some of the students 'cheated' their way in order to graduate.
I would rather prefer to being surrounded by those sycophant or "sipsip" rather than the cheaters because a professor cannot grade a student based on the flattery he gets. I also noticed that I was wrong in judging other students as sycophants. In fact, they were just really friendly. My Bad...
Chill Atmosphere
Generally, the studentry is on 'chill' mode. When you enter the Library, you could likely see students chatting rather than reading books unlike in Mendiola where the competition is really high. In fact, it so intense that you could smell it. Making unnecessary noise in the Library will merit a lot of angry and resentful faces.
In addition, the staff in the Registrar, Deans Office and even in the Cafeteria are very accommodating.
Travel time
I chose not to lease an apartment nor be bedspacer in a place near the school. I prefer commuting everyday from Quezon City to Alabang everyday. I get-up at 6 am. Get-out of the house at around 8-9 am. I arrive at school around 11-12nn. My allotted travel time is always 2 hours.
A Year Later
Fortunately, with the Grace of God, I was able to successfully pass all my subjects during my first year in Alabang. Hopefully, this trend will continue until I graduate.
Hi allan, just stumbled to your page. Can i know how do you commute to SBCA fr QC? Need to be there by 3pm tom what can you advise me to get there on time?
ReplyDeletesorry for the super late reply. If it would still be of help, try riding the MRT until Ayala Station and ride a bus bound for Alabang South station. From there, ride a bus bound for Vito Cruz or Baclaran or ride a jeep bound for southmall or baclaran and say you are going to Alabang Hills Village (located after Shell Gas Station and Avida Condominium). From there, ride a tricycle and say you are going to San Beda.
ReplyDeleteHope this still helps. Hope to see you around.
How much is the tuition fee for 1 school year for College of Law?
ReplyDeleteHi. It will costs around 55 to 60k per semester.
DeleteDo you have any idea regarding the date of SBCA SOL's admission test for the first semester of A.Y. 2015-2017? If none, please at least tell me what month do they usually give tests?
ReplyDeletePls. visit the http://www.sanbeda-alabang.edu.ph/bede/index.php/admissions/school-of-law-applicants/schedule-of-admission-test for updates.
DeleteCurrently, Dec. 5 and 12 are the testing dates for A.Y 2016-2017.
I think October and December are usually the schedule for entrance exams for law.
Hi Allan. From Mendio here. If I transfer to Alabang, will my failed subject be credited there? Or do I have to take it again? Thanks
DeleteHi Murshid, medyo nag-flip flop ang deans office. Minsan pinagbibigyan, minsan hindi. Sorry hindi malinaw sagot ko.
DeletePero mas maganda kung kunin mo nalang ulit. At least madedevelop mo ung mastery ng subject.
Hey Allan! I'm planning to enroll at san beda college of law (mendiola, nearer to my work place). How much is their tuition fee? thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi, for a full load (18-19 units), it can cost up to 56k per sem.
DeleteHello. How do you study? I'm currently on my 1st year 2nd sem and di pa rin ako nakaka adjust. Haha! Thank you! (not a Bedan)
ReplyDeleteHi mae, before going to sleep, I read the codal. I try to understand it while reading it aloud. If I cannot understand it, I try to memorize it. I try to memorize at least 3 provisions.
DeleteNag-struggle din ako mag-form ng efficient 'study habit' noong first year, nag-try ako na madaling araw matulog or matulog ng maaga tapos gising nalang ng madaling araw.
Pero ang pinaka-importante ay mag-aral sa isang lugar with the least distraction so that you could focus well on what you are reading.
And also, try picturing yourself being called by the professor while studying and while reading the cases. Read it as if you are telling a story to someone without the legal terms (if that is possible) haha
Hopefully, you could find the right study habit for you sooner rather than later.
Good luck sa ating pag-aaral.
Hi, Allan. Would you know if SBCA has an executive class for working students and if it's okay to enroll ng 2nd sem though incoming freshman pa lang? Thankss!
ReplyDeleteHi Aivy,
Deletehindi nag-ooffer ang Beda ng executive class per se. Ang pwede mo lang gawin is to arrange your schedule in such a way na 5:30 pm or 7:30 ung start ng class mo sa weekdays tapos mag 2-3 subjects ka nalang sa sabado.
And for your 2nd question, kailangan mag-enroll sa 1st sem kasi karamihan ng subjects sa 2nd sem ay makukuha mo lang kapag napasa mo ung pre-requisite nyang subject nung 1st sem.
Hi sir, when it comes to training in all phenomena, which do you think is more preferable, SBMendiola or SBAlabang?
ReplyDeleteI highly appreciated your most favorable response!
Hi Samsodin,
DeleteThe training is the same because practically both schools employ the same faculty members. However, the difference is the level of competition among the students.
Competition in Mendiola is more cut-throat than in Alabang because the former implements the QPI (maintaining grade among students) stricter than in the latter. I think that makes them slightly better than us in Alabang. Mendiola has always had the better passing rate in the BAR exams than Alabang through the years.
So if you think you could handle the pressure from the professors and the added pressure from your classmates or schoolmates, then by all means, enroll in San Beda Mendiola.
Hi, Allan.
ReplyDeleteCame across your blog while searching for tips on acing the San Beda (Alabang) Law aptitude exam -- I am planning on enrolling this year, and was already been informed by the registrar that the latest date so far would be MAY 7.
1) Does my undergrad GPA matter a lot? I was an above-average student in college years ago, and excelled in most majors but I achieved less than stellar grades in my minor subjects, which pulled down my overall GPA considerably.
2) I have very limited time now to prep for the entrance exam as I am working about 12+ hour shifts on a daily basis. However, I'm doing everything I can. What tips can you give me?
3) Would you know if Alabang also has a probationary/waitlisted list of applicants? The ones who they would consider only after having undergone an interview?
4) What is the minimum number of units I can take? I plan to work while studying at the same time, but fear that 18 units would be too much to handle.
Appreciate your help!
Hi Kathrina,
DeleteTo answer your questions,
1. Nope, your GPA wouldn't matter.
In Mendiola, they just look at the transcript of the student who passed the entrance exam in order to know whether he or she is qualified to be included in the "Laude" or Honor section.
In Alabang, there is no "Laude" or Honor section. So every student who passed the entrance exam are on equal footing.
2. The exam will ask basic questions in English, Math and other subjects. If you have time, try buying those Civil Service Exam reviewers just to at least simulate the type of exam. For the essay portion, at least have time to browse the current events.
3. Yes, as far as I know, they will release 2 lists. The first list contains the list of students who are outright passers of the exam. On the other hand, the second list contains the students who need to undergo an interview first before being accepted in the law school.
In Mendiola, the one who would conduct the interview is the Guidance Couselor while in Alabang, I think the Dean of the School of Law himself is the conducts the interview.
4. I agree that 18 units will be too much for a full-time employee such as yourself.
My advice for you is to take at least the subjects:
Consti 1 (3 units); pre-requisite of consti 2 (2nd sem)
Crim1 (4 units); pre-requisite of crim2 (2nd sem)
Sem1 [theology subject] (1 unit);
I hope that my answers were helpful.
Feel free to ask me, if you have other questions.
Hi, Allan.
DeleteI made it to SBCA Law!
Thanks for the tips. Very helpful. I'm just worried about not knowing exactly which subjects to take. I received recommendations similar to yours, except that I should also take up Persons and Family relations, s 5-unit subject.
What are your thoughts on.this?
I didn't include Persons and Family Relations as one of your recommended subjects to take because it is a prerequisite of Wills and Successions (3rd yr subject)
Deleteahm.
Congrats by the way! Galing! see you around campus.
Salamat! May retention policy na ba sa Bedabang, at saka maintaining QPI?
DeleteLast question -- I'm thinking of following your recommendation, but may I know the least number of units I am allowed to take per sem? Yung sagad na underload talaga. Need to make sure I can manage both work and law school who.
Hi!
Deleteyup my retention policy na ung Beda Alabang and QPI na din, nagsimula last year.
Re: minimum number of unit, I will ask the registrar during our Enrollment week on the 1st wk of July
Hi Kathrina, you need to write a letter addressed to the Dean if you want to have an underload 1st semester. You need to indicate the reason why do you want to have an underload semester.
DeleteHi gusto ko lang sana itanong kung papayagan ba ako mag entrance exam for Law school sa Beda kasi may line of 7 yung majors subjects ko. Sabi sa qualifications nila dapat daw not less than 80 yung grades e. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi, May I ask kung sino source mo?
Deletekasi I just checked the SBCA website, wala namang nakalagay na dapat not less than 80 ung grades.
I'll ask around na rin.
Hi again! I asked again the registrar for some clarifications.
DeleteSorry I have to delete my earlier reply.
Magandang gawain itong blog mo kapatid, just stumbled on it while trying to look for SBCA's passing rate for the 2015 bar exams.:) Never knew about that team formation thing, hahaha. Ibulong mo na lang sakin next time kung sino2x yan. I will tell you though that I have survived (thus far) ng walang daya, and I'm sure you did too. Mabuhay ka pards! I will wait for your name to come up come next year's bar exam results.:) -Patrick
ReplyDeleteSige kwento ko sayo next time, hehe...
DeleteHi. Questions lang. Okay lang ba ang 9 units every sat ko lang kukunin? Or may ganung choice ba sa sbcm? :) ilang units po to grad? Baka abutin ako ng 5years or more pag weekend lang noh?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Hi,
DeleteI don't know the exact number of units because Mendiola recently changed its Curriculum but I think the total number of units still ranges from 160-170 units for the Bachelor of Laws program.
Regarding schedule of classes, Mendiola is implementing block sectioning. Normally, first year students are not allowed to pick their preferred schedule unless you ask permission from the Deans Office BUT they will only allow you if you give a very valid reason.
As to the 9 units load, I suggest you include Consti1 (3units) and Crim1 (4units) they are the prequisites for Consti2 and Crim2 which is offered in the second sem.
I hope my answers helped you.
Hi Allan,
ReplyDeleteOFW ako ng 8 years and planning to return back to the philippines at the end of the year. Planning to take up law from scba also by next year. I have a uk mba with merit and finished my bachelors degree sa isang local univeristy sa manila. A have a few units na failed sa local uni sa manila pero naretake ko naman sya at pumasa. Ask ko lang sana kung you think makakaaffect ba to sa application ko or would they consider my mba transcript instead since yun ung huling mode of study ko? Maraming salamat and more power to your blog.
Regards,
LBC
Hi, sorry for the confusion.
DeleteKakatanong ko lang sa registrar kanina regarding TOR. sabi nya ok lang na may failing subject basta grumaduate ka dun sa undergrad school mo.
Regarding your situation, ung undergrad TOR ung kailangan mong ipasa for your application. yun kasi requirement ng Supreme Court.
By the way, galing mo sir, may MBA ka na, gusto mo pa mag-law. Idol!
Good evening sir. Ask ko lang po kung same day yung entrance exam na written at interview sa COL o hihintayin pa result ng exam tas pababalikin pa for interview? Salamat po!
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteDifferent day ung entrance exam sa interview. 2 list kasi ung ilalabas na results. Ung unang list, ung mga outright passers and ung pangalawa, kailangan pang pumasa sa interview para makaenroll.
Hi, Im planning to pursue law. What if nagwowork ako ng monday to saturday. 8am to 5pm? Pwd night classes?
DeleteHi,
DeleteDon't worry. Classes in law school are usually night classes. More often than not, the classes starts at 5:30 pm
Do not hesitate to ask the dean's office if you could arrange your schedule that works best with your working schedule.
hi i’m from san beda mendiola po.. if ever di umabot qpi ko at magtransfer ako sa sbca maccredit po ba yung mga pasadong subjects ko??or may required na grade??
ReplyDeleteHi Vanessa,
DeleteYup macrecredit yan.
Kung mayroon mang hindi macredit dahil hindi parehas ng units ung subject, may arrangement na ienroll mo lang ung subject pero hindi mo na kailangang pasukan tapos iadopt nalang ung grade mo sa mendiola.
Thanks!!
Hello kuya ! Can I go for law school even if I took up BS Tourism ? Thankyou po . God bless
ReplyDeleteHi Rach
DeleteYup. any four-year undergrad course will do. Just pass the necessary requirements for you to qualify for the entrance exam and then pass the entrance exam then you are good to go.
Hi kuya! Incoming freshman ako sa SBC-Mendiola law. Do you have any advice kung pano ako makakaadjust agad sa acads? :) And ano ang mga pwede ko nang aralin before magstart classes? :) Thank you! Hehe.
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteEach student has his/her own pacing with regard to studying so there is no correct blueprint in adjusting for law school. You'll find your groove eventually. First try if it is effective for you to study at night or study in the morning, study in a coffee shop among others. It is trial and error basically.
TIP: When reading, read the pages with your eyes and mouth. Basically read it aloud. Honor Students and Bar Topnotchers say that this method is effective because it helps you retain the information because more senses are working together.
Also, limit unnecessary distractions such as late-nigh gimiks with barkada, out of town etc. Do these things only during sembreak.
If you really insist on having a headstart on studies. Start buying codals. You could also read my post "Freshman Law Student Starter Park" or those post under the Law School life label hehe.
One more thing, join my org, AAA, Alliance For Alternative Action, when you want to have affiliation in Mendiola.
Good luck! Enjoy your remaining days before the start of the grueling law school life.

ReplyDeleteKuya, I'm a transferee po from another law school. Hindi po Beda Mendiola. Will they credit my subjects? If not, can I start as a freshman? I called the admissions office yesterday, and inquired, they said that before I could take the entrance exam I should make a letter to the dean, and wait for his approval. Did you go through the same process? Ano po kailangan ilagay sa letter?
ReplyDeleteHi!
DeleteYup, I submitted a letter addressed to the dean. What is required is a Letter of Intent. You will indicated in the letter what school were you originally enrolled and the reason why you are transferring to San Beda Alabang.
Address the letter to Dean Ulpiano Sarmiento III
As for the subjects, for sure some of your subjects will be credited.
I did submit a letter of intent and they credited most of my subjects but I didn't take an entrance exam. Maybe this is an additional requirement for transferrees from other law schools aside from San Beda Mendiola
Kuya, did you pass other requirements along with the letter of intent? Mauuna po ba ang entrance exam kesa ang pag-pasa ng requirements? Thank you very much sobrang helpful ng blogspot na ito :)
DeleteHi, I am not sure which comes first but I think your requirement should be ready before taking the exam.
DeleteIf I remember correctly, I submitted 2 forms including the Letter of Intent. Here is the link for the downloable forms:
http://www.sanbeda-alabang.edu.ph/bede/index.php/admissions/school-of-law-applicants/application-a-recommendation-forms
And it would be great if you could have a copy of your grades ready so that the Dean's Office could know which subjects will they credit you for.

ReplyDeleteHi! I have a few questions about Alabang. The failed subjects taken in Mendiola, does Alabang make you retake them? Are there affordable dorms/condos near SBC-A? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi!
DeleteFor the failed subjects. Yup, you should retake them in alabang but if you could get an exit grade from your prof then you will have the option to not take it again.
As for the dorms/condos, there are a lot of them because las piñas and muntinlupa have a lot of villages in the area.
ReplyDeleteHello po. I am currently still enrolled in San Beda Mendiola and unfortunately failed miserably in Consti1 and Consti2. Frankly, I think the grading in Mendiola is unfair, but I digress. Hindi pa naman po complete ang grades and there's a slim chance I can still make the 78 cut off but I just wanna be informed ahead of time. Tanong ko lang po is
1) Ano retention policy in Alabang?
2) Will my other passed subjects be credited?
3) My failed subjects will I have to take them again?
4) May completion po ba ang Alabang? Kasi I would want to take up 2nd year subjects sana din.
5) May mga affordable condo/dorms near SBC-Alabang po?
Thank you.
Hi, yup. I feel you. The grading system is may seem unfair because most of the time it is arbitrarily given. Profs hide in the principle of "presumption of regularity". But to answer your questions.
Delete1. Yes, Alabang recently implemented the retention policy. Dean Ulan announced it during the deans assembly last year. *However, I doubt if this will be executed well*
2. Yup, your subjects will be credited. Don't worry.
3. Yup, you have to take them again unless you can get an exit grade from your prof.
4. The thing about Alabang is you could take whatever subject you want.
i.e. If you failed crim2 A.Y 2015-2016, you have a choice to take it again A.Y 2018-2019
you could take as many 2nd yr subjects as you want as long as you have passed the pre-requisite which is oblicon and if it is within the max allowable units.
5. There are a lot of affordable dorms near the school if you are willing to have a roommate.
My piece of advice to you is for you to exhaust all available remedies before transferring to Alabang. talk to profs if necessary so that they could bump your grade to reach the QPI (every point counts)
But if you decided to transfer to Alabang, rest assured that
Dean Ulan and the rest of us Alabang students will be welcoming you with open arms. (naks!)
I actually talked to the dean's office re: exit grade but they said they only give them to people whose grades are at the line of 7, but unfortunately, mine is 68. Is there an underlying message to "exhaust all available remedies before transferring to Alabang"? Does that mean their way of teaching isn't as great? I don't mean to make that sound offensive or condescending. I just really need to know which school would be best to transfer to, all things considered. My prof is Dean Ulan for Oblicon so I'm hoping all the reviews regarding how he gives grades are true and I'll pass too. Also, how's the way of life there in Alabang? Because in Mendiola, a meal can be had for less than a hundred. Thanks in advance for answering!
DeleteHi,
DeleteWhat I mean about "exhaust all available remedies" is for you to eliminate the "what ifs" because I know a few students who flunked the same subject twice but still managed to be retained. I don't know the specifics about how they managed to pull it off but I can safely say that they exhausted all remedies.
As to the life in Alabang, you could still buy a meal for less than a hundred. The food in the canteen/caf is better than the ones served in Dom Felipe Cafe that's for sure! haha.
I see. And if you don't mind me asking, did you consider the other universities in the University Belt? I'm also thinking that Alabang is too far a place to transfer.
DeleteYup I asked my orgmates who transferred to other Law Schools as well. I narrowed down my choices to 2. San Beda Alabang and CEU School of Jurisprudence.
DeleteUltimately, what made me transfer to Alabang is that I won't have to adjust so much as to the teaching style because the professors are practically the same. A huge plus is that I could exchange notes/tips to my orgmates who are retained in Mendiola.
I'm thinking of transferring to San Sebastian or FEU rin kasi they're tried and tested law schools and have fared considerably well in the bar exams. Any thoughts?
Deleteahm. To tell you honestly, I was dissuaded by 2 of my orgmates who transferred to Baste to not transfer there. They say that only 20% of the class will pass and that is not necessarily merit-based and worse, the Dean and Assoc. Dean are a little bit "power-trippers".
DeleteRegarding FEU, I am not sure about this but I think they do not allow transferees. So a student should take first-year law studies again. I am a big fan of their Dean though. Dean Sta. Maria is very clear and concise when explaining the provisions of the law.
If those schools will be your choice, my advice to you is to consider doing the "white-wash" or take all of your first year subjects again. It is as if you are a new student.
Could you please expound more on your 1st paragraph? I have not honestly heard much about their way of teaching but from the very little information that I got they have been good reviews (that they're focused on the student and their staff is very accommodating).
Delete"only 20% of the class will pass and that is not necessarily merit-based". Come to think of it, a little like San Beda right? I have heard of professors who only pass less than 5 in a class of 20, and worse of favoritism based on gender alone. As well as those who pass or fail students surprisingly, if you know what I mean.
Sorry but I couldn't really expound because I haven't personally experienced their way of teaching.
DeleteAll the information that I got was from my orgmates who transferred there. I don't know the veracity of such information but I took it seriously because they gave me a stern warning. They said that things were better when Dean Riano was still their dean.
Hi, may I ask if would they allow deferral of enrollment? I have already paid the reservation fee this sem. but I opt to enroll next year pa. I am a working student kasi and my sched. won't allow me to attend the 5:30 - 7:30 pm classes. Please send your advice. Thanks and GOD BLESS!
ReplyDeleteHi.
DeleteOk, I will get back to you on this. I'll ask the registrar during our enrollment on the First week of July.
Hi I'm from San Beda Mendiola and it's taking forever for our grades to be released. I plan to transfer to SBLA if my QPI won't make it. I have a few questions and thank you in advance.
ReplyDeleteWhen would the SY 2016-2017 start? As well as the enrollment for transferees?
What are the requirements needed in order to transfer?
Are there apartments or room for rents nearby the campus?
Thank you again!
Hi Katrina,
Deletea) A.Y 2016-2017 starts on July 12 and July 8 is the day of the enrollment for transferees
b) The requirements include:
1. duly accomplished forms found in the SBCA Website, recommendation form and Student Academic and Discipline Appraisal Form
2. Letter of Intent addressed to Dean Ulpiano Sarmiento III
3. Copy of grades from the Deans Office (for evaluation of subjects to be credited)
4. TOR and other documents can be submitted within the academic year.
c) There are a lot of apartments for rent nearby the campus. Subdivisions such as Inner Circle and Tirona are some of the villages which are just walking distance from the campus.
Good luck! Hope your grades could meet the QPI requirement.
Hi do you know if SBCA is still accepting late examinees for the entrance exam and late enrolees as well?
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure the school is still accepting transferees and late enrollees as well. However, if you mean taking the entrance exam for first time law school takers, you have wait for the next exam schedule for next academic year.
DeleteHi do you know if SBCA is still accepting late examinees for the entrance exam and late enrolees as well?
ReplyDeleteHi Allan,
ReplyDeleteIs the dress code for Alabang corporate attire? If so, is this strictly implemented? What would pass as corporate attire that is commonly worn by the students?
Sayang ang mga jeans at polo shirt if ever. 😁
Hi,
DeleteYes, the dress code is implemented. It is strictly implemented by some professors so it is better and safer to wear corporate attire during weekdays.
For men, Slacks, shorts-sleeve/Long-sleeve polo, leather shoes
For women, slacks or skirt, blouse and blazer, flat/high heels shoes
Hindi sayang yan! at least the dress code will help you improve your wardrobe.
Hi, I'm a freshman law student in Beda Alabang this sem..and we are about to start classes..I just wanna ask what books and codals did you use on your first year?
ReplyDeleteThanks. :)
Hi!
DeleteFor the books, wait for your teachers to tell their preferred choice for textbooks.
For codals, buy the Civil Code (Persons and Family Relations), Revised Penal Code (Crim1) and Constitutional Law (Consti1).
Good luck! see you around.
Hi sir! Where is it convenient to photocopy (SCRA) cases? Is it inside or outside campus? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi,
Deletesa Library (both in Mendiola and Alabang Campus) you just need to give them a list of cases and downpayment. You could get them in an hour or two (depending on their current workload)
Hi! Thanks for your informative blog! Haha
ReplyDeleteI'm a cpa and planning to take up law school by next year, any suggestions? Im planning on teaching accountancy if may vaccancy sana sa SBCA. When should i start preparing kaya for the entrance tests? Also, what do you suggest that to read in advance during my free time? Should i read codals na ba or brush up with my logic muna? Haha thank you! More powers to you sir!
Hi Renin,
DeleteWow! It seems that you are really passionate about pursuing the study of law. Visit the SBCA website before the end of 1st semester or by October to know when are the examination dates.
You don't need to read the codals (you might get burned out), just be updated with the latest news or watch Legal Helpdesk on Youtube. You can also read editorial articles written by Dean Mel Sta. Maria, or former Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban.
You are at an advantage because you are already an accountant. You have a headstart in law school with regard to the law subjects that you have already taken in College.
Thanks for reading my blog. Good luck.
Hi Allan,
ReplyDeleteGood day!
I am a graduating PolSci Student. I'd love to enroll in SBC Mendiola. However, I have a full time job and I currently live in Bulacan. My parents are sick so I don't want to leave them (My decision to commute everyday) I'm just afraid of failing after all the confessions I read about Mendiola campus. Hahaha.I can't afford to re-enroll again as I am the breadwinner of the family. Sayang naman ung bayad. Haha. My other options are DLSU COL and USTE FCL. Any thoughts?
Thanks and hoping for your response :)
Reech
Hi Reech,
DeleteI have a friend who has a similar situation with you. My friend stopped in Law School because he does not have enough time to do a full time job and to take care of his parents.
Not that I am discouraging you to take up law but the reality is studying the law will eat most of your time (wherever law school you end up enrolling)
I am not sure if DLSU COL and UST Faculty of Civil Law gives executive classes for working students (classes are only on weekends).
On the brighter side, don't be afraid of all the confessions you read online (including mine haha). Yes, they are realities of law school but the thing is each student is unique. Some students may find such subject or prof difficult while other students will find such subject or prof relatively easy.
Everytime someone asks me if "Mahirap ba mag-aral sa law school?" My go-to answer is "Enroll in any law school to find the answer yourself" hehe
Maybe Reech you should also consider UP Diliman. It's the nearest campus to Bulacan and there is an evening program - Section E.
DeleteHi Idol! I just want to ask these following questions,
Mahirap ba o sobrang mahirap?
I am afraid na magkaroon ng financial problem so my plan is to take 13 units per sem and to finish it in 5 years. Ang sabi kasi sakin ng registrar ay 10 units daw ang minimum nila per sem. Thank you!
*I really need your suggestion with subjective reality and experience inside the school.
Hi Daniel,
ReplyDeleteTo answer your questions,
1. Sa Mendiola kasi umaabot ng over Php 2,200 ung per unit while sa Alabang, Php 1810 lang. Allot at least Php 18,000 for the miscellaneous fee.
2. Full load varies per year eh. sa 4th year ang full load umaabot ng 27 units. Pero 18-21 units for 1st year to 3rd year.
so kung 21 units ka sa Mendiola, aabot more or less 64,200 ang tuition mo, Sa Alabang naman, more or less 50,580. laki ng difference no? Aside from the tuition, you should also allot money for your books which can cost up to Php 2,000 to 5,000 per sem.
3. Oo naman. the beauty of studying in law school is back to zero lahat. pantay pantay kayo lahat. Syempre dapat tanggalin ung mga bad study habits. Madaming laude or may latin honors nung undergrad ang nadedelay din sa lawschool.
Medyo relative ung hirap, baka ung mga subjects na nahirapan ako, mas madali pala sayo.
Yang Financial Problem is a reality that most of the law students face. I am fortunate na may nagpapaaral sa akin to defray the costs of studying in law school.
Kung may makikiusapan ka na kamag-anak na pwedeng magsubsidize ng pag-aaral mo mas maganda or kung working ka, pwede ka naman magloan.
If ever tumuloy ka, I suggest you enroll one or two major subjects (3 unit subject and above) tapos the rest puro minor (1 to unit subjects) per sem.
Maganda yang plan mo pero baka hindi yan kaya in 5 years. Mahigpit kasi sa Mendiola, for example, hindi ka pwede mag-advance ng subjects for 2nd year kapag kulang ka pa 7 units or more sa 1st year.
Pero kung sa Alabang, kayang-kaya kasi may summer classes na offered.
Good luck! sana nakatulong ung info na binigay ko.
Idol! Thank you so much dito sa response mo. Nag-canvass ako sa ibang schools like DLSU-COL,Arellano SOL, tsaka San Beda Alabang. It seems that mas mura sa San Beda - Alabang, though mataas ang mortality rate.
Anyway, maraming salamat! Laking tulong nito. Ipagpatuloy lang sana ang mga ganitong blog.
ang galing po tlaga ng blog na toh :) thank you sir. very informative. I would like to inquire lang po. I am a registered nurse, currently working. going to a law school is really my goal. i am looking for a school na maganda ang reputation yet hindi sya mahal. yung sakto lang po.i am not that brainy, not an honor student during my college years but sana maka cope up ako sa law school. worried lang ako financially. what do you suggest? and as early as now, ano po magandang basahin? really grateful na nabasa ko tong blog mo. :)
ReplyDeleteHi!
DeleteFor law school suggestions, I think it would be better if I know where you live and the location of your workplace. But I will assume that you are situated here in Metro Manila.
If the 2 factors you are considering in choosing which law school to go are the performance rating and the tuition fee, I think you should try inquiring in Pamantasang Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM). PLM ranked 9th in the Top 10 list of top performing law schools in the Philippines by no less than the Legal Education Board.
As for the early reading, try reading editorial/opinion pages of your preferred newspaper. Try to grasp how they construct their argument or if you have time to watch videos, try watching Legal HelpDesk in Youtube and choose the episode you are really interested to know about.
Thank you for reading my blog. :)
Thank for reading my blog.
Hii. May I ask, how hard or easy is the college entrance exam of mediola? :)
ReplyDeleteHi Vaughn,
ReplyDeleteThe running joke in College of Law Mendiola is that the entrance exam is the easiest exam you will take in Law School LOL.
The exam consists of topics/subjects normally given in an entrance exam. Reading/Answering those college reviewers or better yet those Civil Service Reviewers is just enough preparation for the exam.
Also prepare for the essay portion at the end of the exam so better brush up with the current events.
Hi Sir Allan,
ReplyDeleteI'm preparing for the next admission process since nahirapan din ako mag decide whether to pursue MBA or law school (and i missed the schedule for the current A.Y.)I am a CPA and upon checking the requirements, may required number of Eng and Social Sciences units. Question is, if hindi complete yung units ko, hindi ba ko makakapag proceed to the enrollment process? Have you encountered same problem?
Thanks a lot for this blog. I was reading the comments to see if there's any related topic but it seems na ako lang ang may ganitong issue. Lol
-MAT
Hi Mark,
DeleteYou can still enroll despite lacking the required number of English/Social Science/Filipino subjects. The reason why the Transcript of Records is submitted during admission is for the Registrar to evaluate the subjects you have taken and determine whether you have subject deficiencies or not.
I encountered the same problem, in fact, when the list of students with academic deficiencies were released, I found out that I still lack 6 units of English and 6 units of Filipino.
Normally the registrar will release it at the 2nd semester. This will give time for the students to enroll in the summer to complete their deficiencies. Students with more than 6 units of deficiency (like myself) are given 2-3 summers to comply.
I suggest that you should try completing them as early as possible so that you won't be having any problems later on. This is because instead of enrolling in the summer classes for your deficiency, you could be having a summer job as a paralegal in a law firm or just enjoy the summer break to regain sanity (LOL).
If you are having a difficult time which post-grad course to pursue, try the MBA-Juris Doctor Dual Program of DLSU.
You will be hitting two birds with one stone so to speak.
Thanks for reading my blog.
Hi, I'm planning to take the entrance exam this October. I have a lot of considerations actually, one of those is the schedule. I'm currently working on night shift, unlike the others, and I've got no plans of transfering since my job's paying me decenlty. It'll help a lot s tuition ko if ever, since sariling sikap lang to. Haha. So do they offer day classes? And is it possible not to take full load for the first sem first year class? I'll be working full time din kasi. My 2 choices are Beda Mendio and UST, mas lamang ang Beda sakin ngayon. But I'm still weighing the circumstances. Thank you in advance for your help!
ReplyDeleteHi Peng!
DeleteUnfortunately, San Beda is not offering day classes in law school. Normally the classes starts at 5:30 pm.
Though, it is possible not to take the full load. I think the minimum number of units per semester is 10 units.
Good luck in your entrance exam and hope you will enroll in San Beda Mendiola.
Hi Allan
ReplyDeleteIm planning to enrol in San Beda this coming 2nd sem SY 2016-2017 however i have the following concerns before entering:
1. im an engineering graduate and i developed my interest in taking up law when i got exposed to LGU's (Municipal Government, City Government and Provincial Government) due to my work and of course the notion of being the only lawyer in our family sounds appealing to me. ahaha. my question is. will it be hard for me to adjust for law school considering how different engineering is with that of law school? (do you have colleagues or classmates who has the same situation as mine but managed to pull through?)
2. Do they offer subjects from first year first sem for second sem? (e.g. criminal law 1 and etc)
3. I live in san pedro laguna and the commute going to alabang is convenient for me however I'm planning to juggle my work and law school, my concern is that, is the schedule in San Beda alabang convenient for someone who works for 8am-5pm? also do they offer english subjects beyond 5pm because i might take additional units for english considering i only have roughly 9-12 units of english during my first course.
4. This a very noob question but ill ask it anyway! Im a bit concerned about the method of teaching in law school, do they usually make you memorise terms and definition then gauge you through recitation/exam (is this mostly essay type/enumeration/case study?)? in engineering they mostly require you to listen to lectures then gauge you through exam (mostly computation type), recitation is not a thing when your taking up engineering. Sorry for this long question i just need a headstart on what to expect when i enter law school.
Thanks for this very informative blog! thanks in Advance!!!
Hi Christian John,
DeleteTo answer your questions.
1. Law School is a place where students with different academic backgrounds converge. I have classmates who are Nurses, CPA, Engineers, Medical Doctors, Policemen and even a Priest!.
As for adjustment, don't worry, it is understandable that 1st year in Law school will be an adjustment year. All students are of equal footing regardless of their academic background, undergrad school and whether you they graduated with latin honors or not.
2. For San Beda Alabang, most of the subjects are seasonal. However, the Dean Office offer special classes from time to time depending on the volume of students who are need of it.
For example, Crim1 maybe offered in the 2nd sem to accommodate those who did not make it in the 1st sem. Obligations and Contracts (Oblicon) maybe offered in the 1st sem for the same reason.
3. Classes in San Beda Alabang usually start 5:30pm so if you work until 5pm, I suggest you take a schedule which starts 6:30 pm or 7:30 pm. Better yet, if your boss would permit you, you can leave the office by 4:00 pm.
Don't worry about your lacking english units because you can take them during summer time in a school which is convenient to you. Law Students are discouraged to take their english subjects in San Beda Alabang. The registrar wants the students to enroll their academic deficiency elsewhere.
4. The method of teaching in Law school is called the "Socratic Method". The professor asks a question about the assigned topic and the student should think and answer like a lawyer.
Reading assignments usually include 10-20 codal provisions, 1 to 2 chapters of the assigned textbook and Supreme Court cases. On top of those, students are required to memorize and understand the same. San Beda discourages the students to glance at their notes while reciting.
Examinations are usually Essay-type. Unlike your Engineering days, Recitation is a daily occurrence in law school. This daily exercise will teach you how to pray hard so that you can answer the question of your professor to obtain a high grade.
Thanks for reading my blog.
See you around in case you enroll next semester.
Thanks Allan for the reply this is very helpful specially for someone who doesn't have any idea about law school. Just one last followup question for number 3. Does it mean they will allow me to take major subject like crim 1 (given that it is offered) even if I have a lacking English units but commits to take it on a summer class?
ReplyDeleteYes, the Dean's office will allow you. The registrar will release the list of students who have academic deficiencies. The list will include the number of units of english/filipino/social science lacking per student plus their other documentary deficiencies if any (Transcript, Birth Cert, among others)
DeleteHi i would like to ask if may uniform ba ang students ng college of law. thank you
ReplyDeleteLaw students do not wear a uniform. Instead, the School of Law of San Beda Alabang imposes a dress code which is corporate attire.
DeleteHello po :) Planning to take up law this year.. pero I dont know where. I like Beda, but it's kinda far pero kaya naman siguro. May work po ako sa airport (NAIA T2) gaano kaya katagal ang travel time? Mas malapit ba ang alabang or mendiola? aaaand, may executive classes po ba sila? :)
ReplyDelete(Sorry ang gulo ng order ng tanong ko po)
Hi Lalaine,
DeleteFrom your workplace, mas malapit ang Alabang lalo na kung may sariling car ka because of skyway. It will take about 1 hr to go San Beda Alabang.
Good luck! sana mag-law ka this year and sa San Beda ka mag-aral
Hi po kuya, i just undergo an admission test at SBCA but then i got a message that i should be interviewed for further assessment and evaluation while my other classmates who took up the same admission have none. Does that mean that i failed on their written exams? If so,
ReplyDelete1. Who do you think will be the one to interview me?
2. What are the questions they usually asks?
3. Is there a possibility that i wont be admitted?
Thanks po and Godbless
Hi,
DeleteHaving an interview means your score is did not reach the passing score but is near the passing mark.
Usually, the one who will interview you is the Dean himself. He will ask you why do you want to study law and why did you choose to study law in SBCA.
The possibility that you won't be admitted is vey minimal, just show the Dean that once you are admitted, you will study hard and that you will make him proud.
Good luck!
Hello po kuya Allan. I am planning to take admission test sa SBCA this year. May specific date po ba para mag exam? Kailan po ang first sem and how much po yung minimum load?
ReplyDeleteHi!
DeleteJust check the San Beda Alabang website, there is a monthly schedule of exams posted there.
For Minimum load, that will be 10-12 units. First semester now starts in July. Second semester starts in December.
For scheduling, I suggest you take subjects which starts either 6:30 pm or 7:30 pm for you to have ample time to go to class.
SBCA offers Saturday class but no Sunday class. Saturday has classes which starts as early as 9:00 am, weekday schedules usually start at 5:30 pm.
Hope you enroll this sem and don't forget to also take PhiLSAT.
Hi po good morning, ask ko Lang po sana kung anong mga masuggest niyo na books na pwedeng basahin in preparation for the entrance exam?
ReplyDeleteThanks po
Hi!
DeleteMy usual suggestion is the Civil Service Exam Reviewer because you can use it for entrance exam and for the civil service eligibility exam.
If you could find any material relating to UPLAE, I suggest you can also check the UPLAE or any law exam reviewers in the National Bookstore.
Hi just want to ask if the logic based questions are hard in the entrance exam? Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Raphael,
DeleteDifficulty is very subjective, it depends on the capacity of the person.
On my part, I find it difficult especially the sequence type or those which involves drawings and you determine what is the next pattern.
Having reviewers which has exercises involving those will surely help. I suggest you get one if you have time.
Hi just took the exam i was wondering if ever i failed the exam does san beda allow to retake their exam?
ReplyDeleteYes. I think they will allow you to retake an exam
DeleteHi! Your blog is very informative and helpful! I am a graduate of Human Resources Development Management and planning to take up Law this year at Sbca. I just have a few concerns re the tuition fee. Do they allow paying in an installment basis? And if so, do you have an idea how it works? Thank you in advance for your response:) God bless!
ReplyDeleteHi!
DeleteYes, they will allow you to pay tuition fee by installment basis.
The tuition fee will be divided, 50%,25%,25%
50% will be paid during the enrollment period
25% will be paid before the midterm exams
25% will be paid before the final exams.
In case, you lack funds for the first installment, you need to pay at least 70% of that amount.
To illustrate,
For example, your total tuition amounts to Php 50,000
The first installment is Php 25,000 followed by Php 12,500 for 2nd installment and Php 12,500 for 3rd installment.
In case you dont have Php 25,000 for the first installment, just write a letter addressed to the comptroller for you to pay only the 70% of that amount which is Php 17,500.
In case you don't have the money during the 2nd or 3rd installment, just a write a promissory note addressed to the comptroller.
Just make sure you pay your outstanding dues before enrolling in the next semester. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to enroll.
Hope this will help.
Thanks for reading my blog :)
Yes! Thank you so much! :)
Deletei have this fear of public speaking but my dream of becoming a lawyer outweighs my fear of public speaking. i'm really trying to overcome it pero ang hirap. any tips? do you think i wont be able to survive law school because of my condition?
ReplyDeleteHi!
DeleteDon't worry because recitations are only inside the classroom and not with a wide and full audience but with only few of your classmates inside.
My tip for you is to listen to the podcast Quick and dirty tips for public speaking.
Also, try to interact more with other people. converse and mingle with them. The more you connect, the more confident you will become. Practice it with your relatives during family reunion hehe
And also I noticed that most people who are shy of public speaking tend be confident if they talk about the things they are passionate about. For example, if you are passionate about basketball, you will confident talking about it eventhough you are shy speaking publicly.
Applying it in law school, if you have the passion to study the law, you can eventually shed off your fear of public speaking.
Thanks for reading my blog!
Thank you po for taking the time to reply. I just want to ask po... is it recommendable to read law books this summer or should I let this summer pass? I'm just worried that I won't be geared up with the basics of our law and go to law school empty handed. If you do recommend me to read law books, what books should I read?
DeleteHi again,
DeleteJust enjoy this summer vacation first and just try read or watch the news. Be up to date with the current events. You will pick up some laws here and there. You might get drained if you start reading the law books before the start of the semester.
For books, just to be economical, just buy the codals first, also please read my post entitled First year starter pack.
Good afternoon Sir Allan! This has been bothering me for a long time, I just want to know your opinion sir. Galeng po kasi ako sa Jose Rizal University, and initially, I planned na doon na mag proceed ng studies ko ng Law, but then someone advised me (yung boss ko sa trabaho, she's from UP btw) na bakit di ko daw subukang humanap ng ibang school na nag ooffer ng law, kasi kung sa JRU daw ule ako mag aaral, limited ung chances nag mag "grow" ako outside of the academic atmosphere, since komportable na ako doon sa school na yun dahil nga dun ako nag aral nung college, hindi ko raw machachallenge ang sarili ko. Also, she said na humanap daw ako ng kilalang law school para maganda daw yung foundation ko.
ReplyDeleteOn the contrary, huminge naman po ako ng advise sa dati kong professor (he is a lawyer btw), ang advise nya naman po saken, pare parehas lang naman daw ang librong ginagamit sa pagtuturo ng law, parehas lang ang ituturo sayo, magagaling din ang faculty dito (he is reffering to JRU) so nasa studyante talaga yan.
Kung mag eenroll ako sa isang recognized na law school, would it really give me an edge? or pwede namang sa JRU nako mag proceed ng law school at mag enroll na lang eventually for the review for pre-bar sa kilalang law school? Is it really on the student, or the school where you went to has big factors?
Please share your thoughts on this Sir Allan, thankssss! :D
Hi!
DeleteBoth of your boss and former professor raised valid points.
Schools like San Beda consistently perform well in the BAR exams because they implement a strict academic regulation. They filter out students who did not meet the minimum grade requirement called QPI and only retain those students who reached that grade.
To illustrate, each year San Beda accepts 750 first year students, the next year, almost half of those will not reach the QPI and will transfer to other schools. When they reached 4th year, from 750, it will only be 100-200 students left.
This is the reason why San Beda is consistently one of the top performing school in the Philippines.
On the other hand, your former professor also raised a valid point.
Take for example, San Beda. I shared that they implement a strict academic regulation but when you see the BAR exam passing rate, there are still some students who will not pass the BAR exams.
Yes, a recognized law school will give you an edge but ultimately, it is the student who will put on the hard work and effort to study the law. Law schools can only do so much. It is not the school who will take the BAR exams but is it is the student.
My tip for you is study in JRU because you are very familiar with the school but understand that you will really need to put on the effort to study the law.
Thanks for reading my blog
Thanks for the tip Sir Allan, I'll do my best to succeed! Your blogs are really helpful for those planning to take up Law, I feel lucky for having to find your blog. Goodluck and Godbless po! :)
DeleteGood for you. The real advantage if you finish your law degree and become a lawyer at the top schools is in your career as lawyer. The contacts will be a big boost and that you will get only from the top schools.

ReplyDeleteHi, I read from the comments that SBC Mendiola sets apart laude students from the non-honor students.. Just wanna ask if the school still does that.
ReplyDeleteAlso, does SBC Mendiola CoL requires uniform, or any attire will do? Does the school allow jeans and t-shirt?
Lastly, until what time open ang library ng SBC Mendiola and may separate library ba for CoL?
Thank you so much!!
Hi!
DeleteYes, there is a "laude" section for first year law students. They are usually put in the 1-E section. However, not all laude students are put in there because some honor students prefer to be put in a regular section.
San Beda Mendiola does not require a dress code. Shirt and Jeans will do but it is also best to also invest in polo barong, slacks and leather shoes.
San Beda Alabang requires dress code on weekdays. The dress code is corporate attire.
Library is usually open until 9 am. and COL has a separate library.
hi, i hope you still check this post. i will be transferring to SBCA School of Law this year. Do you happen to know if there are affordable apartments/boarding houses near alabang hills village? Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteThere are a lot of affordable boarding houses near alabang hills because there are alot of villages nearby. There is T.S Cruz Village, Tirona Village, Inner Circle Village, and also inside Alabang Hills as well.
Also, some ads are posted in the bulletin board at the Dean's office for those who are looking for roommates.
Hi Sir Allan, would it be possible to know the Philsat cut off score accepted in SBC(both Alabang and Mendiola)? I'm planning to enrol this coming semester as a freshman and did check their website for the information but found none. They only stated in the site the submission of the Certificate of Eligibility and did not specify the grade they required.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much in advance.
Hi,
DeleteI think San Beda only requires the minimum score 55% because they also require their potential enrollees to take the San Beda Law Entrance Exam.
In short, a prospective student law student is required to pass both the PhiLSAT and the Beda Law Exam.
Good luck!
Hi! I received a message from the admin about my status in SBCA-law and told that they would contact me for my interview. Took the exam last April 29 and got the results a week later. I already called their office about the schedule but they haven't released anything yet. Do you think they would still consider me for admission? I'm just worried that they wouldn't call me anymore being that it's been 2 weeks since the results. :( I hope you can get to this message soon! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi Tina!
DeleteThe Dean's office is quite busy during the month of May because of the finals exam schedule and the preparation for our graduation.
Don't worry, they will contact you soon enough.
Hang in there Tina!
Hi Allan! Thanks replying! This gave me hope! Have a great day!
DeleteAnd oh, congratulations to you!
ReplyDeleteHi Allan, need you advise. i took entrance exam at Mendiola, can i use the exam result, if i passed, to enroll at Alabang? I am working, and plan to study as working student. Do they have curriculum for the working student? I prefer Alabang since it's nearest to my office. When i initially searched SBC site, i only found that one in Manila, and so, i took the entrance test there. I thought if i passed, i can enroll at Alabang. please confirm.
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteI have a friend who also took and passed the entrance exam before in Mendiola; He also tried to used such result to enroll in Alabang. However, the registrar of SBCA told him
that he should take another entrance administered by SBCA. This is because
San Beda College Alabang has already obtain automomous status from Mendiola campus.
Thank you Allan! What is recommended for working student like me? Mendiola or Alabang? I'm not sure if I read previous comm on this blog that Mendiola dont have summer classes?
DeleteBtw, this blog is very helpful. This' my first time reading blogs :)
Hi,
DeleteI suggest you enroll in San Beda Alabang.
First, it is near your office
Second, there is summer classes
Third, your schedule is more flexible because the helpful staff in the Dean's Office can help you arrange your schedule.
Fourth, the atmosphere in Alabang is laid back compared to Mendiola where competition amongst students is very stiff and can easily burn you out
Fifth and most importantly, SBCA School of Law is the Happiest Law School in the Philippines! this is what our beloved Dean Ulan has instilled in us hehe.
Good luck!
Thanks!
DeleteHi Allan! I'm planning to enroll this incoming school year in SBCA law. I also graduated with latin honors in my pre-law course. I checked the website of SBCA and it stated that those who graduated with latin honors are entitled to a scholarship for the first sem of their first year. However there is no any other info on how to apply for this scholarship. I wanted to ask if you have info regarding this? Like the procedure in application or documents needed to be submitted? Thank you in advance!
ReplyDeleteHi!
DeleteI think you don't need to apply for it because they will give it to you automatically once you prove that you indeed graduate with latin honors. They probably would see your Transcript of Records and a copy of your Diploma.
Haven't you taken the SBCA law entrance exam yet?
Thank you for the response! I alredy took the extrance exam last February but I only graduated this June.
DeleteHi,
DeleteI think they will automically give you the incentive for honor students once you enroll.
Good luck!
Hi Allan. I would like to ask if transferees are still required to take the PHILSAT? Also, does SBCA accept subjects with exit grades (in my case, I will have my line of 7 subjects in Mendiola exit with 75) or is there a need to retake them instead? Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi!
DeleteThere is no need for transferees to take PhiLSAT because the exam is only for those incoming freshman this A.Y 2017-2018
SBCA accepts exit grades provided that the subjects in Mendiola and Alabang is of the same number of units.
For instance during my transfer to Alabang, I retook PIL because PIL is only 2 units during my time in Mendiola but PIL is a 3 unit
subject in Alabang.
There is an option given by the Dean's Office for the student to enroll the same but there is no need to attend the same, the grade given by Mendiola will be carried over. For instance, when I enrolled PIL in Alabang, I have the option not to attend the subject and take the
exams but I still attended the same because I didn't learn a thing during my PIL class in Mendiola.
Hi allan i just want to ask is it possible if I can go transfer to SBC Mendiola this second sem if i enroll in different law school this coming sem. or do i need to wait for next year? and if ever do i need PHILSAT result thank you in advance hindi kasi ako umbot sa last day ng entrance exam sa mendio thank you in advance
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteSan Beda Mendiola do not accept transferees unless for special compelling reasons i.e the transferee is a top-5 student in his/her previous law school.
the PhiLSAT result is essential for incoming freshman students this A.Y 2017-2018.
Hi, I might be in the same boat you were in. Potential incoming 3rd year, depending on QPI negotiations.
ReplyDeleteQuestion: assuming I get an exit grade for the 2nd year subjects I took (I was full load), would I be a regular 3rd year in SBCA if I transfer?
Hi,
DeleteIt depends. When I transferred to Alabang, the curriculum in Mendiola was changed and the effect of which is that some subjects were combined with other subjects.
The Dean's office will decide based on the assessment of your subjects. They will first look at your subjects whether they will credit it or not.
Barring any setback, you will probably be a regular 3rd year student.
Good luck on your QPI negotiations.
Hi just stumbled upon your blog randomly lol. I got admitted into San beda Alabang for law school and I was just wondering if it's normal to be placed upon academic probation? I was asking my fellow interviewees and found out they were under academic probation din lol
ReplyDeleteSame case as mine. Probees need to pass all first year subjects or else we can't be admitted again for second year.
DeleteHi!
DeleteDon't worry too much about that. It is just mechanism/strategy for the school to ensure that students will take their law studies seriously.
However, the enforcement is not that strict because the school still allows the students to enroll the next academic year regardless whether they passed all their subjects or not.

ReplyDeleteHi tanong lang po
ReplyDelete1st year going to 2nd year sana sa SBCM kaso di po umabot QPI. Pag nag transfer po ba sa SBCA ng may latin honor nung prelaw pa may scholarship pa rin po ba silang binibigay?
Thanks in advance!
Hi,
DeleteI am sorry to hear that.
I think you are no longer eligible because when you transfer to another school, you already earned units so your status is not an incoming freshman. But just to be sure, just ask Mam Nella, she is the staff in the registrar's office. She will gladly help you.

ReplyDeleteHello sir I just read your blog and I'm really curious if is it a good decision to take law right after my pre-law or should I take a rest for a while. I'm a graduating (hopefully) student from PUP and I want to pursue law at SBCA but I'm afraid that I'll flunk the entrance examination. Thank you in advance
ReplyDeleteHi... I'm from SBCM and is now thinking of transferring to Alabang because I failed to meet the QPI requirement. I read your blog and it is very useful to me. May you kindly answer my questions.
ReplyDelete1. How much do you spent for travelling from QC to school? (back and forth)
2. How much is the tuition fee for 3rd year including miscellaneous?
3. What is the usual time of class? Is it like Mendiola that usually starts from 3 or 5pm?
4. Can I advance subjects?
Thank you so much:)
Another question pa po pala is may summer class po ba sa Alabang unlike in Mendiola?
DeleteHi!
Delete1. I Allot at least Php 200.00 for travel back and forth. That includes jeepney rides and the tricycle ride inside the Alabang Hills Village
2. Surprisingly the tuition fee is cheaper compared to Mendiola. It is less than 50k
3. Yes it is similar to Mendiola, but the class which starts at time is usually Atty. Cabaneiro and some Sem classes. The usual start of classes is 5:30 pm
4. During my time, we are allowed to advance subjects. I was not part of the graduating class last year but I was able to enroll a lot of 4th yr subjects. However, there is a recent memo of LEB prohibiting students who have undertakings to take advance subjects.
5. Yes, there is summer classes, just follow the FB page of San Beda College Alabang School of Law.
Good luck! welcome to the happiest law school
in the Philippines! haha
Hi, very interesting blog. Thank you so much for this! I'd like to ask, (1) meron din bang bumabagsak sa entrance exam ng SBCA SOL? Or lahat naadmit then hanggang under probationary lang? (2) Marami bang activities ang school na required attendan? I'm afraid I'm a working student, baka hindi mameet yung ibang requirements. Thank you so much again!
ReplyDeleteHi,
Delete1. Yes, may bumabagsak din naman.

ReplyDeleteHi sir! been following your helpful blog. I dropped persons last semester due to conflict of schedule. I passed all of my other first year subjects. I would like to ask your opinion, which subject/s in second year first sem should i replace with persons? what is the most demanding subject (and easiest) in second year? :) thank you very much.
ReplyDeleteSBCM
Hi,
DeleteBased on the number of units alone, I say replace Property with Persons because it is a 4 unit subject.
As for the demanding part, it truly depends on the professor BUT what makes Second year difficult is that there are a lot of subjects to be taken per semester. So you need to manage your time wisely so that you will be able to handle your acad load per sem.
Good luck!
Hey man love reading the blog. Do you have any tips on how to study? I was a Cranmer nung college I would study siguro mga 3 days before Lang the tests hahaha
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteIn the first 2 months or before your midterms, find what is the suitable time and place for you to study
i.e
Coffee shop, Home or Library
and as to the time, try sleep early and wake up early or study at night until the morning.
There are a lot crammers in law school
due to fact that there are a lot of things to read. Cramming is pretty normal during the exams.
Just don't forget to study everyday to prepare for the daily recitations.
Hello :) Do I need to take the PhilSAT as well as the entrance exam of San Beda?
ReplyDelete-future freshman
Hi,
Deleteyes, you have to take PhiLSAT and the entrance exam of San Beda.
Good luck!
Hi! I'm an incoming 2nd year student of SBCA. Any advice po sana Kuya kung sino goods na kunin prof sa mga subj? And sched nila if you still have it po. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi,
Deletefor Property, Atty. Charlton Romero
for Sales, Atty. Busmente
for Nego, Atty. Busmente
for Crimpro, Judge Palamos
You can ask Ate Ji or Atty. Jun Cadugo regarding their schedules.
Good luck!
Hi po! tanong ko lang po if galing po ng SBCM as 1st yr(di umabot ng qpi and bagsak ng crim1 & consti1 which is di rin nag take ng crim2 other than that wala ng problem) tas nag transfer ng SBCA ano po status nun? And pwede bang mag take 21 units ako? lastly ilan ang maximum units ng summer?
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU and God Bless po =)
Hi,
DeleteYou are classified as a first year student because you lack more than 6 units.
I don't think they will allow you to overload because from what I've heard, transferees is on probationary status.
For summer, the maximum units is 6 units.
Good luck!
Hi! Tanong ko lng po, I failed 3 subjects in 2nd year sa Mendiola. If I transfer to Alabang mggng 2nd year completion po ba ko? Thank you and God bless!!
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteYes, you will have a status of 2nd yr completion because you failed more than 6 units. Unless, you obtained exit grade from Mendiola.
Nevertheless, even if you are in completion, you can still take 3rd year subjects.
Good luck.
I was told po kasi na Alabang does not honor exit grades. Pwede naman po pala. Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteDuring the time when I transferred, exit grades were still honored.
However, I chose not to have my failed grades get an exit grade. I enrolled it and grind it out.
Maybe Mendiola wants to limit giving out exit grades because it is quite tedious for them to prepare for the necessary paper work to change grade.
You just need the proper timing and knowing the right persons in Mendiola. *wink* *wink* haha
Haha thanks for the tip po. Will Alabang accept late enrollees po? Like really late 😂
DeleteHi, yes I have an orgmate who transferred to Alabang one month after the classes have started. He was still accepted and allowed to enroll.
DeleteGood luck!
Hello po, last nlng po ngsulat po ba sya ng letter sa Dean's office? Kasi I went to SBCA yesterday for medical kaya lng d ako umabot eh sabi dw po last day of enrollment na. Thank you
DeleteThe first step is to pass a letter of intent addressed to Dean Ulpiano Sarmiento III.
DeleteThe last day of enrollment is for students who are already enrolled in Alabang the previous semesters and not applicable to transferees.
Hi! I'm from SBCM incoming 2nd year na sana kaso di po ako umabot sa QPI. Balak ko sana lumipat sa *ibang school* this school year para i take yung failed subjects ko then next school year lilipat ako sa SBCA.
ReplyDelete(1) Ma credit pa kaya yung mga subjects na na-take ko sa SBCM sa SBCA?
(2) If ever na maipasa ko yung failed subjects ko sa *ibang school*, ma credit ba mga yon sa SBCA?
(3) Nag aaccept ba SBCA nang transferees from other schools?
TIA!
Hi!
DeleteTo answer your questions,
1. It depends if your second school credits your Mendiola subjects because Alabang will now evaluate your subjects based on the evaluation made by your second school.
2. It depends if it such subject has the same number of units with Alabang. In case there is mismatch, i.e CrimPro in 2nd school is just 2 units but CrimPro is 3 units, the Dean's Office will usually offer its transferees to enroll CrimPro again but there is no need to attend or take exams. It is merely for compliance, they will just copy the grades that your second school gave you after the semester.
3. Absolutely, usually the students who transfers to Alabang originally came from Ateneo or Mendiola.
4. Yes, underload is allowed. You just need to enroll the minimum amount of units. It is usually 10-12 units.
Your plan is quite challenging because you will again adjust to a new environment after adjusting to your 2nd school. Why not directly transfer to Alabang (the Happiest Law School in the Philippines haha)
Thank you Allan! May addtl questions lang ako
Delete(3) Nag aaccept ba SBCA nang transferees from other schools?
What I mean here is tatanggapin padin ba ako kasi I came from SBCM then *another school* tapos SBCA?
(5) In addition, pag lilipat ako sa *ibang school* kasi ma ggrant kasi yung request ko for exit grade specifically sa ObliCon(75). So, pwede ko ma-take sa first sem yung may pre-reqs na subjects. Pag sa SBCA daw kasi hindi pwede exit grades if galing sa SBCM.
(5.1) Kung lilipat ako this school year sa *ibang school*, eg. then I passed all my pre-reqs subjects ng ObliCon this school year.
(6) Pwede bang 8units lang i enroll ko this semester sa SBCA or dapat talaga 10 units yung minimum?
3. Yes, SBCA accepts transferees from other schools.
DeleteNo need to retake oblicon if oblicon is already credited sa second school mo. tapos ma-credit din ung ibang pre-req ang oblicon Provided na same number of units sya with what is offered sa Alabang.
I doubt kung payagan kang mag 8 units kasi hindi ka pa graduating. Pwedeng mag underload pero dapat may min. units talaga.
Also, pwede bang mag underload sa SBCA at minor lang lahat?
ReplyDeleteHi, I graduated last 2014 from dlsu with a degree in chem. eng. I am a regular student with a gpa na sa middle range and some failures in some subjects. Tanong ko lang po if
ReplyDelete(1) may chance po ba ako sa San beda alabang law school?
(2) may kick out po ba sa law school like sa undergrad sa dlsu?
(3) may magagamit ba ako from my engineering education sa law school or start from zero talaga?
I really want to know about the law and how it works but, I am really worried if I can survive law school.
Hi, to answer your questions
Delete1. YES, ABSOLUTELY! our class salutatorian is an engineering graduate who also had a bad study habit during his undergraduate days. I also have blocmates who are engineers so you have a legitimate shot.
2. Yes, especially in San Beda Mendiola if you failed to reach the QPI or failed the same subject twice. However, San Beda Alabang is more lenient because you are not automatically kicked out but you'll still be given another chance because you will have probationary status.
3. Unfortunately, you have to start from zero.
If your dream is to be become a lawyer, go for it! enroll in law school. Good luck!
Thank You Po. One question pa po may effect po ba ang undergrad gpa sa chance na ma admit sa law. Like a minimum GPA ng undergrad degree or sa admission test lang ung basis ng admission.
ReplyDeleteNone. GPA is not a factor, only your score in the admission test. In addition, you also need to pass PhiLSAT.
DeleteHello po Kuya. May I know kung nag aaccept ba ang beda-A ng freshies kahit second semester na? Thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteHi,
DeleteYes, Beda-Alabang accepts freshman students in the second semester. I know someone who did this.
Is it normal for a freshman Law student to have an anxiety attack? My dream is to be Lawyer, but everytime I read cases in persons, i don't understand anything. Sometimes i'm thinking, if I continue my Legal studies next year because i'm really having a hard time to adopt the cases. And i feel that i'm not yet ready for Law school. Lastly, is it required in law school to be a good writer?
ReplyDeleteFor your opinion? does my writing skill is suitable for law school? Thanks!
Btw it's my 2nd wk in Law school, and I already feel like quitting coz of the tons of cases that i have to read, and I really can't understand some of the cases.
Last na last na talaga. I was not brilliant student back in my undergrad and HS (average student) In fact I wouldnt survive my college if i didnt cheat on some of my exams.
Hi,
DeleteHopefully by the time you read this, you haven't quit law school yet.
It is normal that you don't understand some terms in the assigned cases because you are still in the first year.
Just skip some of the procedural aspect. Here is one trick that you can use, if you read the full text from the SCRA. Read the facts of the case and the relevant issue stated in your case syllabus. i.e Most cases have several issues but just pick the issue relevant to Persons and skip the issue which is tackled in Consti, Statcon or Crim.
After knowing the relavant issue, go to the syllabus section or the "same-same" section located after the case title. This will help you read the cases faster. It takes a lot of experience to read and understand the cases. Just be patient.
As for the writing, yes, knowing the basic grammar is a must. However, the professors are more interested on how you well you understood the assigned readings. Hence, they conduct recitations. They are more concerned in training us how to think like a lawyer. They assume that we already learned basic grammar in College.
If you can't understand the assigned cases because of the sheer volume, try organizing a study group so that you'll divide the assigned cases and prepare case digest. Teamwork is highly encouraged in law school
but refrain from doing it during examinations. Teamwork must be done in preparation for
the recit, quiz and exam and not during.
You just need to practice speaking in english and also try reading the news. Eventually, you'll get used to it.
The thing with law school is that you'll get a clean slate. there are some honor students who flunk law school. You just need to be determined and think how bad do you really want to become a lawyer.
Relax.
Also, is it required in Law school to be super smart or fast learner? Because i'm not that kind of person. Sometimes when I don't understand what am I reading, I tend to stop and browse on the internet or just sleep. I'm also the kind of person na "pwede na yan" as long as may gawa pwede na. I don't how will I change this habit. Any suggestion po?
ReplyDeleteYou don't need to be super smart. You just need to be diligent in studying your lessons.
DeleteGetting tired is normal but you just have to
will yourself in finishing your readings. Studying the law takes a lot sacrifice. It is so demanding that it is considered a "jealous mistress"
Try reading the codal before going to
sleep to have a brief overview on what the article is all about. Then the next morning, memorize it or at least understand it. Then read the textbook and cases. The cases are assigned so that you know how to apply the codal provisions assigned.
You must know what, where, when is your optimal way of studying i.e you understand the readings better during 4 am at a coffeeshop with headphones on.
By these time, you should know what is the best time for you to study.

ReplyDeleteI'm also get intimidated with some of my classmates/blockmates. Some of them are from UP, Ateneo, and a former law student. I get intimidated cos I know they are smarter than me, and they can adopt the lesson easily. The way they speak/think are far different from me. even we say na law school is a equal footing, the problem is, they can adopt easily than me, and for sure they're smarter than me.
ReplyDeleteI'm also afraid to make mistakes when it comes to english grammar. Syempre pag tatawanan ako, diba? ang hina ko na nga maka-adopt, ang tanga-tanga ko pa sa english. That's one of the factor why i'm having a thought to pursue my legas studies next year. Parang gusto ko muna improve english ko and pagsulat ko. Any suggestion po pls.
Supposing that they are really smarter than you. Why would that stop you from achieving your dream as a lawyer? Prove them that you belong. Doubting yourself will do you harm than good.
DeleteDuring my first year in law school, my blocmates were fluent in speaking in English and I also have a bad grammar. However, I tried my best to cope up. You can do that too. Talk with your blocmates and try listening to your professors on how they speak. With constant practice, you'll improve.
Don't be afraid to commit mistakes. One of my professors, Judge Serrano, told us during our Credit Transactions class that we must not be afraid to commit mistakes, that is why they conduct recitations so that when we eventually become lawyers, those errors will
be minimized or eliminated during the practice of law.
Watch the movie Bar Boys, maybe you'll get inspiration from the character of Carlo Aquino. You have similar dilemma when he entered law school.
Any tips bro on how to answer exams in law school? Btw thank you for your advice man. I really appreciate it.
